- According to Dev Ross, Aniu and other totem spirits are parts of the Great Guardian Spirit. It means that Aniu took forms of the fox, the raven, the wolverines and the bear.
- The Fox spirit originally was supposed to be an arctic fox, but since the story already had the white animal character (Aniu), the Fox spirit was changed into a red fox.
- Muru mentions his parents, hinting that he once was a mortal mouse and later became a guardian spirit.
- In the long past Aniu was a regular grey wolf, but after her death she became the white wolf and the Great Mother of all wolves, making Balto half-spirit.
- Balto had dreams with the spirits, because he denied his wolf nature.
- In the scene with the wolverine spirits Balto tries to catch their scent, but gets confused and says "It's like they were... never here.". That means the totem spirits have absolutely no scent, hence neither Balto, nor the stray husky would ever be able to find Aniu.
- Although in the original movie there's no totem poles, the sequel tries to convince that the totem pole always was in Nome, i.e. Aniu and other totem spirits always were here and watched on Balto since puppyhood.
