"Whoopee!"

-Star collapsing to the ground when Kaltag punches him upside the head

Star is a member of Steele's dogsled team. He has a high and slightly raspy voice and is a secondary antagonist-turned-secondary tritagonist in Balto alongside his friends Nikki and Kaltag. He is voiced by Robbie Rist.

Personality[]

Small, meek, and timid, he is often picked on and browbeaten. No one pays Star any mind unless it is to physically harm him in someway. One could argue if he's even friends with Kaltag and Nikki as they never speak to him. His presence in the trio seems to be hardly tolerated and he probably hangs around with Kaltag and Nikki for status and protection. It is clear in the film that besides Jenna and Rosy, Star doesn't dislike Balto as much as the others do. In fact, he seems to have the most faith in Balto like during the square off between Balto and Steele, Star is the first to stand up to Balto, pointing out that he is trying to assist and after Steele's fall, he is the first to show Balto support. This implies he only complies with the abuse Steele and the group inflict on Balto because he himself is not strong enough to stand up to Steele. He makes up for this with his nicer nature, though, even if he is is somewhat dim. Star is also quite kind and more morally driven than the rest of his friends, as he was one of the first dogs in the group to point out what was actually at stake: the children’s lives, not Steele’s position as leader.

Appearance[]

Star is a greyish-purplish and tan husky with Aqua blue eyes. He is smaller than most of the other dogs which combined with his timid personality, it makes him an easy target for the others to browbeat him.

Relationships[]

===Balto===
"They should build a statue of him."
-Star happy for Balto's heroic actions

Star most likely viewed Balto the same way the rest of Nome did; an outcast for his heritage, but he did not seem to act nearly as harshly, if at all, and even seemed to feel slight sympathy for him. However, while not actively a participant in the bullying towards Balto, Star did not stand up for Balto nor do much to stop the abuse, and did somewhat participate by supporting Steele and teasing him to appease his friends, but it was clear that he was truly perplexed to see Steele acting in a hostile manner towards Balto. He did not seem to fully agree with these methods, but whatever questions he had about this were silenced by his friends’ force. This did not stop Star’s internal sympathy for Balto though, which he came to grow and realize when Steele jealously refused to let Balto help them return the medicine to Nome. Star was the first to question why Steele wouldn’t let Balto help, as he was aware that the children of Nome’s lives were at stake, showcasing his agreement with Balto. After Balto defeated Steele, Star readily accepted his leadership, and eventually redeemed himself by helping Balto return the medicine.

Steele

Steele bully
What's with Steele? All Balto wants to do is help.
- Steele was the original leader of the dog team, and the highly popular hero of Nome, gaining Star’s admiration and fear. Star thought highly of Steele and often did what he could to be recognized by him, but these failed most often. However, Star seems to show more fear than admiration of Steele, as he is often the scapegoat for bullying and mistreatment by the other dogs, which Steele obviously doesn’t care about. This could also attribute to Steele’s brutal fatality and position as leader of the dog sled team. Fortunately, his admiration and loyalty to Steele began to wager heavily when Steele got them lost and refused to let Balto help them. This especially became evident when Star first questioned Steele’s hostility towards Balto, even though he was aware the children of Nome would die without the medicine. Star, along with the other dogs, slowly recognized Steele’s lack of care for their hometown and stood back when Balto defeated him, causing them to abandon their loyalty to Steele and switch over to Balto’s side, which Star openly agreed with as he truly did not like Steele all that much.

Jenna

Way to go, Balto.

Despite only seeing her and having no interactions with her, presumably he felt content that Balto became Jenna's mate.

Nome

Despite Steele not wanting Balto's assistance, Star was very well aware of the consequences that would occur if the medicine was not delivered in time, showing that he clearly cared for the people of Nome, one of the reasons that would enlist in his switching loyalty from Steele to Balto.

Boris

Despite only seeing him once and had one interaction with him, he teased him since Steele did but presumably he didn't want to do such actions.

Trivia[]

  • The official novel of the original film states Star is a husky, describing his fur color as grey-and-cream.
  • In Balto II: Wolf Quest, Sumac is comparable to him.
  • In a deleted scene near the end of the movie where Steele is about to threaten Balto, Doc and various other dogs come to Balto's aid, but Star thinks Balto deserves the collar and stands up to Steele by taking it off his neck and giving it to Balto, believing that Balto deserves it. Not to mention people are sad that Star will never stand up to Steele.
  • Jenna, Rosy, Star and Doc never seem to be hostile to Balto because of his wolf-side.
  • He's only dog to get punched by Kaltag and bury himself in the snowy alley of Nome, Alaska at the same time AFTER Kaltag and Nikki stop having a conversation which gets to the point after Balto exits the scene.
  • Star is the first member of Steele's team to leave him for Balto as Balto becomes the new leader of the team, proving Star hates Steele even though he never stands up to him.
